The destruction of the demon Archimonde and his hordes came at the slopes of Mount Hyjal, trapped by the World Tree. Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Trolls, Orcs, Tauren and other races banding together to prevent the ultimate victory of the Burning Legion in Azeroth, banishing the dark monsters back into the voids.
All was not won, however.
The hordes of the Lich King, now commanded by what was once Prince Arthas, roam the lands seeking their dominance of the world. Arthas, following his chase for revenge against the Dreadlord Mal'Ganis, slew his foe in the icy lands of Northland, killing the demon with the cursed blade Frostmourne, before returning to the north lands of Lordaeron and killing his father the King. Arthas proceeded to purge the lands, killing defenders, his old mentor, the majority of the High Elves and desecrating their Sunwell, bringing the necromancer Kel'Thuzad back to life. Arthas was called back to Northrend, however, by the Lich King's cries of pain.
Illidan, the Betrayer, whom had been released by the ambitious Night Elves from captivity, had consumed the Skull of Gul'dan, absorbing its powers and forever casting himself out of the race. He made allies with the the survivors of Arthas's elven purge, and the ancient Naga race of sea dwellers - once Night Elves whom had fallen under demonic influence and cast down into the seas. Illidan's attempt to destroy the Lich King was foiled by his brother, Malfurion, his love Tyrande and Illidan's old warden Maiev. Illidan fled to Northrend following his defeat, seeking to defeat the Lich King in his own lands.
Arthas, however, was there too, and defeated the Betrayer in single combat before he could destroy the Lich King. Illidan, wounded, retreated, and Arthas descended into the icy catacombts to take his place in the undead lands on the Frozen Throne. His hordes now turn to destroying those who tried to slay him.
Three years have passed.
The humans of Lordaeron, lead by the Wrynn royalty, chased by the undead monsters, settled a new home in Stormwind, thanks largely to the help of Edwin VanCleef and his brotherhood. The dwarves, lead by Magni Bronzebeard, in their mountain city of Ironforge maintain a secure connection with them via the Deeprun Tram, a gnomish invention. The Gnomes have moved in with the dwarves, their own city irradiated with poisons, enemies and delusional gnomes who try to 'defend' their city, unable to tell friend from foe. The Night Elves are also part of this Alliance, maintaining regular cross-continent ships with supplies, troops and information, following the orders of Tyrande whilst Malfurion pursues his visions within the Emerald Dream.
The Orcs and trolls, after sailing west away from the human lands before Arthas's fall, established their city of Orgrimmar, founded by Thrall, the Warchief. They made allies with the huge Tauren warriors, lead by Cairne Bloodhoof, who hold their own city of Thunder Bluff in the lands of Mulgore, at the other side of the Barrens. These races are, however, joined by the unlikely partnership of the Forsaken - redeemed undead warriors who fight against Arthas, lead by Sylvanas - Sylvanas herself a personal victim of the fallen prince, forced to his ranks after he breached the desparate defences she placed before him.
The undead, the dark monsters of the lands, the evil groups hiding in the shadows, and the two massive armies of the Alliance and the Horde all do battle now, none trusting any others, each trying to subvert their enemies.
But who will win?
